How To Keep Your Property Healthy During Winter

Written by Casey Shearns on . Posted in .

If there’s one season that’s going to bring about a ton of challenges for property owners in the Northeast, it’s the winter! Not only is the cold tough to fend off, but the chilly conditions and precipitation can lead to significant issues for your property. The best way to deal with a property damage disaster is to keep it from happening altogether! You should be enacting the right measures to prevent the worst-case scenario from happening, but what are they? Below, we share our expert tips for keeping your property healthy during the winter!

Check Your Attic’s Insulation

Believe it or not, the amount of insulation your property receives plays a huge role in its safety against damage events! Specifically, your attic’s insulation levels help protect it from ice dams. When ice dams form, they can cause water to pool on your roof with no way of escaping. Over time, the weight of this water and the dampness of the surface cause it to seep through, leading to roof leaks and water damage! Preventing this is as simple as keeping your attic well-insulated. If you feel that it’s lacking, consider installing some additional padding.

Insulate Your Pipes

Your pipes are another serious problem during the wintertime. Your plumbing pipes are designed to transport water – regardless of what temperature that water might be. So, what happens when a surge of warm water tries to travel through a pipe that is frozen to the touch? Oftentimes, that pipe will end up bursting! In order to prevent this, hire a plumber or head to your local home improvement store to find some pipe insulation. Pipe insulation gives your pipes a barrier to protect them from colder air.

Get Your Heating System Serviced

Especially if you have a type of heater that is flammable to everything around it, getting it serviced before the cold kicks in is paramount. Inefficient heaters can sometimes be even more dangerous to your property! Not only does it skyrocket the cost of utilities, but it could lead to fire damage disasters that are hard to recover from. Don’t let yourself fall victim to these vices! Get your heating system serviced by a professional before you need it.

All I have to say is WOW and FANTASTIC. I just got done building out my new professional office with Soil-Away’s construction division and they went ABOVE and BEYOND. Scott and Mike, the carpenters are skilled artisans. The project got done on time and the project came in on budget! The finished results have been blowing people away. Much better than I could have anticipated. Anyone is welcome to come to our office, Bright Light Chiropractic in Hooksett to check out the fine work they did. Simply can’t sing enough praises for them. Sorry that the picture doesn’t do the job justice. Thank you Jack and your team. -Dr. Jay

Since day one, I’ve known the owner, Jack, to be a hard-working and selfless leader. Through the efforts of him and his team, he was able to restore my flooded restaurant to tip-top shape. I was amazed with Jack’s orderliness throughout the entire process. Jack has proven to me that he is trustworthy, as both a friend and an individual in the work environment.

Highly recommend Soil-Away. A pipe in our upstairs bathroom gave and sent water down through a wall for at least a day before we noticed water dripping through our kitchen ceiling. Our insurance put us in touch with Soil-Away and they were at our house the next morning to assess the damage and dry things out. Joe, Ray and Tom were phenomenal to work with. They explained every part of the process to us and were very professional and friendly. If you have to deal with similar issues call Soil-Away, you won’t regret it.
