Avoid Costly Damage during Hurricane and Storm Season

For many homeowners just the words “Hurricane Season” can send them into a panic, and understandably so. In recent years we have seen, and many have experienced, the damage that a hurricane or powerful storm can do to a home. However, there are some steps you can take to protect your home during this tumultuous season.

Understanding your insurance

If you are living in a vulnerable part of the country for hurricanes, you will want to make sure that your homeowner’s insurance covers you for any damage as a result of a storm or hurricane. Familiarize yourself with the deductible in the event of a loss. Insurance carriers offer a wide range of coverage and deductibles when it comes to flood insurance. It may be wise to shop around to find the right plan for you.

Roof inspection

During a hurricane or powerful storm one of the most susceptible parts of your home is the roof. A qualified roofing contractor can perform a roof inspection looking for any weak areas that may be in need of repair.

Basement monitoring

Flooding in the basement of a home is a big concern during the storm season. This doesn’t mean you have to clear out the entire basement. Water monitoring systems are available that will remotely send an alert as soon as a change in water level is detected. This can help you to head off any problems before they cause significant damage to your home and property.

Safe storage

If your home is prone to flooding during strong storms you will want to keep your most treasured possessions, family heirlooms, photographs, etc. in a safe and dry location. Sealing items in zip-locked waterproof bags or watertight containers can mean the difference if your home is hit by a hurricane or tropical storm, ensuring that these possessions remain out of harm’s way.
Taking these extra steps to protect your home and belongings can go a long way in keeping your home safe in the event of a weather emergency. Highly recommend Soil-Away. A pipe in our upstairs bathroom gave and sent water down through a wall for at least a day before we noticed water dripping through our kitchen ceiling. Our insurance put us in touch with Soil-Away and they were at our house the next morning to assess the damage and dry things out. Joe, Ray and Tom were phenomenal to work with.
