3 Of The Most Common Fire & Soot Accidents

Written by Casey Shearns on . Posted in , .

Dealing with fire and soot damage can be a nightmare for a homeowner. These types of damage events are especially distressing because they often happen out of the blue. While it’s true that accidents can’t always be avoided, there are some precautions you can take to help prevent these disasters from occurring to begin with. By understanding the most common causes of fire and soot damage, you can save yourself time and money. Preventative maintenance is your best defense against these mishaps. In this post, we’ll share some insider tips on the three most common fire and soot accidents and how you can steer clear of them.

Oil Burner Puffbacks

If your home utilizes an oil burner to provide heat in the coldest months, you should be conducting regular maintenance on it! This isn’t just useful for maintaining the efficiency of your unit, but for preventing costly accidents.  One such potential hazard is an oil burner puffback, which occurs when an oil burner fails to ignite immediately. This delay allows fumes to build up, eventually causing an internal explosion. To avoid this potentially dangerous situation, it’s crucial to schedule annual maintenance and stay alert for any unusual odors or noises coming from your heating system.

Cooking Fires

As much as we want to think of ourselves as 5-star chefs, there’s always an opportunity for things to go wrong in the kitchen! Cooking fires can spread rapidly and cause untold property damage, but the good news is that they’re easily preventable with the right safety measures. Keep your cooking area free of combustible materials. If you need them, place them far away from the stovetop! Avoid loose-fitting clothing, be careful when handling grease, and never leave the area unattended. If you follow these tips, you’ll give yourself the best chance of avoiding a fire accident!

Chimney Soot Build-Up

As with every type of heating system you own, your chimney needs the regular maintenance to prevent soot from building up. Three primary factors contribute to this buildup: neglecting annual maintenance, using low-quality wood, and not keeping your chimney adequately warm. To minimize soot accumulation, it’s essential to use high-quality wood that burns efficiently. Additionally, scheduling a professional inspection every year is crucial. When you start a fire within your chimney, keep it small and hot for the best chances of success.

All I have to say is WOW and FANTASTIC. I just got done building out my new professional office with Soil-Away’s construction division and they went ABOVE and BEYOND. Scott and Mike, the carpenters are skilled artisans. The project got done on time and the project came in on budget! The finished results have been blowing people away. Much better than I could have anticipated. Anyone is welcome to come to our office, Bright Light Chiropractic in Hooksett to check out the fine work they did. Simply can’t sing enough praises for them. Sorry that the picture doesn’t do the job justice. Thank you Jack and your team. -Dr. Jay

Since day one, I’ve known the owner, Jack, to be a hard-working and selfless leader. Through the efforts of him and his team, he was able to restore my flooded restaurant to tip-top shape. I was amazed with Jack’s orderliness throughout the entire process. Jack has proven to me that he is trustworthy, as both a friend and an individual in the work environment.

Highly recommend Soil-Away. A pipe in our upstairs bathroom gave and sent water down through a wall for at least a day before we noticed water dripping through our kitchen ceiling. Our insurance put us in touch with Soil-Away and they were at our house the next morning to assess the damage and dry things out. Joe, Ray and Tom were phenomenal to work with. They explained every part of the process to us and were very professional and friendly. If you have to deal with similar issues call Soil-Away, you won’t regret it.
